Practice Being Silent Before God

I was on my walk the other morning and this verse came to my mind. It was very early in the morning. The birds were singing, but other than that, it was very still and quiet.

This is one reason I like to walk in the early morning. Also, if I do not walk early, it is sometimes easy to not fit it in the rest of the day!

I also walk mostly on the asphalt because it is softer than concrete! There are very few cars that I have to dodge. Being silent before God is a spiritual discipline.

Too often it takes time to be silent. I have to still the voices inside my head. No, I am not crazy, but I am sure you are aware of the noisy self-talk that we do in our thinking.

When I am still, I can reflect on God and I am aware of His presence. It is in these quiet moments that I do my best reflections.

I very rarely “hear God” directly, but He does come in the still small voice, or a word from Scripture. When I am ready and still to listen, the Teacher shows up!

Spending time in silence and solitude was not part of my early discipleship. In these past few years, I have allowed myself to practice these disciplines and they have

helped me in my spiritual growth. I encourage all of you reading this blog to practice being silent before God. Find a secret place or take a walk outside when it is relatively quiet and be alone with your heavenly Father.
